In the beautiful afternoon of May 28th 2017, the Macau Special Olympics (MSO) “30th Anniversary Series: Community Promotion—UNIFY Concert" was successfully held at the Tap Seac Plaza. This concert was fully supported by the Macao Borderless Youth Association, Social Welfare Bureau, and Project of promoting the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) and was sponsored by the Coca-Cola Company. Officially, we had held the Kickoff Ceremony for our Macau Special Olympics 30th Anniversary Celebration. Since the establishment in 1987, our organization has not only provided services on sports trainings, occupational rehabilitation, special education supports and community supports, but have even put our efforts on fostering the development of arts and culture for the people with intellectual disabilities (ID). That is the reason why we have chosen to hold our Anniversary Kickoff Ceremony with the UNIFY concert sharing & showing the talents of our ID in Macau. All 5 songs of our “UNIFY” album are recorded & originally produced by our MSO service users, Macau local singers from the Like Entertainment & Productions Co. Ltd. and the students kindly from Escola da Sagrada Familia. The lyrics of the songs are very positive with deep sense of social educational bringing. We are expecting to take music as a platform promoting the social inclusion as well as showing our gratitude towards the Macau SAR government departments and the whole community for all your supports and encouragements for the people with intellectual disabilities.
RUYI (Chinese: 如意; Literally: “as desired; as [you] wish") is the theme for our MSO 30th Anniversary Series events. Our slogan「攜手共創三十載 苦盡甘來‧如意」means “To join Hands in overcoming 30 years of hardships Wishing for Better…..?!". There are a few definitions of “RUYI “in Chinese. RUYI in the Chinese traditional culture on behalf of festive, auspicious, is precisely showing the happiness in celebrating our 30th anniversary. Its various forms & images are just like the way our MSO services are. We have not only provided sports activities to our service users, but we have even concerned & extended our service coverage to offering occupational rehabilitation, special education and community supports to all of them. “ RUYI” in another term means a self-help tool (不求人)in Chinese. We hope that our service users will be able to improve themselves and be independent enough to enjoy their lives in the community. ‧RUYI (“How to be as desired”) is like a question & a concern on whether the lives of people with intellectual disabilities are really as good as they have desired and deserved in the rapid change of Macau social and economic development all these years along? Is the community really as we think for spreading awareness and acceptance well enough for the people with intellectual disabilities.
For the celebration of our 30th Anniversary, we were pleased to hold our “Family Support Network Forum for People with Intellectual Disabilities in Asia” for 3 days from May30th to June 1st, 2017 at the Sands Cotai Center. We had invited experts and families of people with intellectual disabilities from different countries & cities in Asia, including a special guest speaker, Cherish Aperocho, a youth leader from the Special Olympics Asia Pacific to share experiences, strategies on promoting the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Our MSO family forums have been held for 10 consecutive years. This year, the topics of the forum had even covered the issues on special education needs, sports and health, supported employment and the double aging for the people with intellectual disabilities in Asia. This event is dedicated to the great planning & efforts to our Macau families of people with intellectual disabilities. Families of people with intellectual disabilities from over the Asia Chinese communities could now be encouraged to exchange their experiences & to learn from each other in the event. Meanwhile, the forum will definitely promote more supports, acceptance, concern, love & awareness from the public.
